Kashmir Great Lakes Trek Itinerary

Arrive in Srinagar and enjoy a scenic 3-hour drive to Sonamarg, a tranquil town nestled by the Sindh River. Settle into your camp, attend a trek briefing, and take a light acclimatization walk. As the sun sets behind pine-covered hills, you’ll already feel the magic of Kashmir.

Your adventure begins! Trek through dense pine forests, crossing gurgling streams and grazing sheep. The path opens into Shekdur — a beautiful meadow surrounded by silver birch and maple trees. Continue to Nichnai valley, where your campsite awaits beneath towering cliffs.

Today’s trek is a blend of challenge and awe. You’ll ascend to Nichnai Pass, your first high point of the journey, offering panoramic views of lush valleys and rugged ridges. Descend into a serene valley filled with wildflowers, and finally reach Vishansar Lake — a glassy blue alpine lake nestled in a high-altitude basin.

A day to rest, reflect, and explore. Visit the nearby Krishansar Lake, often called Vishansar’s twin, and take in the silence broken only by the wind. You can try angling (with permits), go for a short photo walk, or just soak up the calm. This break also helps your body adjust to the higher altitudes ahead.

This is the most dramatic and challenging day of the trek. Cross rocky ridges and steep switchbacks to reach Gadsar Pass, the highest point of the trek. From the top, you’ll see the twin lakes shimmering far below — a once-in-a-lifetime view. Descend to Gadsar Lake, surrounded by wildflowers and peaks, and rest near one of Kashmir’s most peaceful settings.
